Primary School

Our aim in the Primary School is to ensure that every child reaches his or her potential through developing a love of learning that goes beyond what is taught in the classroom

PREPARE FOR UPPER SCHOOL

We use the English National Curriculum in the Harrow Guangzhou Primary School, which sets our children up well for success in the Upper School, when they move on to IGCSEs and A Levels.

Every class in the Primary School is taught primarily by their class teacher, who is always a native English speaker. However, each class also benefits from specialist instruction in the following subject areas:
Mandarin, our ground-breaking FutureLab, Physical Education (PE), Swimming, Art and Music.

All pupils are also supported by the Language Lab, ensuring that their English develops faster and more consistently than in other schools.

CORE SUBJECTS

English, Maths and Mandarin are considered core subjects. For this reason, pupils in the Primary School have a daily lesson in Mathematics and English. They also have a daily reading lesson, which di ers from the English lesson in its specific focus on word reading or reading comprehension skills, depending on the age and ability of the pupil. Mandarin is taught five times a week.

We have our own Mathematics curriculum, based on the English National Curriculum but with learning that is one year ahead of pupils in other schools.

For the teaching of early reading, we follow the Read Write Inc. programme. This phonics programme runs from Reception to Year 2 and teaches children to read accurately and fluently with good comprehension. They learn to form each letter, spell correctly, and compose their ideas step-by-step. Once children can confidently read words, we further develop their reading comprehension through skills-based reading lessons following the Destination Reader approach from the UK.
