LANGUAGE LAB​

At Harrow Guangzhou, the Language Lab ensures each child has an individualized English development programme: reading, writing and speaking. This begins the day we assess your child: before you join Harrow Guangzhou! And continues until the day your child graduates, ready for a choice of the world’s best universities.​

EARLY YEARS

The Harrow Little Lions Curriculum is designed to support English and Mandarin development side-by-side. Nursery and Reception children (aged 3-5) learn English through Phonics. By the time they start Year 1, they will be at or above National Standards in English.​

Primary and Upper School​

Assessment Day: before you decide to join Harrow Guangzhou, your child will be tested for his or her English level with a CAT4 test, and will also complete a written test and be assessed for spoken English in the interview.​

The Director of Language Lab will then assign a level to your child. We use CEFR (the Common European Framework, A1-C2) levels as our starting point and then add a Language Lab category for Oracy (spoken English). This is a simplified table.​

And then we develop a plan! The Language Lab Guide reports every six weeks to parents, and is available to support the child and the family at any time. Here’s what it might look like for your child:​

Before Your Child Starts at Harrow Guangzhou​

If your child is joining  Harrow Little Lions Kindergarten (Nursery/Reception)

Phonics Launch Pad programme. This will give your child a boost before they start with us.

If your child is joining the school in Primary or Upper School

•B2, C1 or C2；see a Language Lab specialist, who will assess their spoken language competency again, and who will make recommendations for Reading Extension Programme texts. Can also talk to the Head of Lower School, the Head of Upper School or to Heads of Subjects to talk about content catch-up if necessary.

• A1, A2 or B1, they will be invited to join the tailored English Enhancement Programme, at the end of the programme your child will be ready for Harrow Guangzhou.
