A New Chapter Begins: Harrow International School Guangzhou Opens Its Doors to Its Founding Pupils

Harrow International School Guangzhou has officially opened its doors, welcoming its first cohort of Founding Pupils to campus on 24 August 2026 and marking the beginning of a new chapter in Harrow’s educational journey in China.
As the 15th flagship school in the AISL Harrow Group, Harrow Guangzhou brings together more than 450 years of Harrow heritage and tradition with a forward-looking approach to education, providing pupils with a learning environment designed to nurture academic excellence, character, innovation and leadership.
The opening of the school marks the culmination of months of preparation by the founding team and the beginning of an exciting journey for pupils, families and staff.
A First Day Rooted in Tradition
The first school day began with one of Harrow’s most distinctive traditions: the Harrow Bill.
Before registration, Founding Pupils gathered together to participate in this longstanding Harrow tradition, marking the first time that the Harrow Bill has taken place at Harrow Guangzhou.
With roots extending across Harrow’s 450-year history, the tradition provided a fitting start to the school’s first day — connecting the newest generation of Harrovians with those who have gone before them, while establishing a sense of continuity and belonging from the very beginning.
Learning for the Future
Following the morning’s traditions, pupils began their first lessons across the school, quickly settling into classrooms and embracing the opportunities available to them.
From the outset, learning at Harrow Guangzhou is designed to encourage pupils to question, create, collaborate and discover.
Pupils explored innovation and entrepreneurship through the AISL Future Lab and Entrepreneurship Centre, while lessons across the school provided opportunities for pupils to develop their knowledge, creativity and problem-solving skills. The energy and curiosity evident across the campus reflected the school’s ambition to provide an education that combines academic excellence with the skills, character and confidence needed to thrive in a changing world.
Building a Founding Community
The first day was also an important moment in establishing the community that will become central to life at Harrow Guangzhou.
Pupils began forming new friendships, exploring their new surroundings and becoming familiar with the routines of school life. At lunchtime, the Dining Room provided an early opportunity for pupils to come together, share experiences and begin building connections with their peers.
For a new school, these everyday moments are particularly significant. The friendships, traditions and shared experiences established by the Founding Pupils will form an important part of the school’s identity for years to come.
Reflecting on the significance of the occasion, Ruth Whymark, Headmistress of Harrow Guangzhou, said:
“There is something incredibly special about opening a school in its founding year. Our pupils are not simply joining an established school — they are helping to shape Harrow Guangzhou from the very beginning.
At our Orientation Day, Ms Whymark shared the Chinese proverb, ‘A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.’ These first few days represent that first step in our journey together. The traditions we establish, the friendships our pupils make, the achievements they celebrate and the memories they create will all become part of Harrow Guangzhou’s history. I am incredibly proud of our Founding Pupils and grateful to our families for placing their trust in us as we begin this journey together.”
The opening of Harrow Guangzhou marks the beginning of a new chapter for Harrow in the Greater Bay Area. With its Founding Pupils now embarking on their education, the school will continue to build a distinctive learning community grounded in Harrow’s longstanding traditions and values, while preparing pupils to engage confidently with the opportunities and challenges of the future.
